Někdy na počátku 20.století potkává Claude Roc – typický středostavovský mladý Pařížan – mladou lady Anne Brownovou. Po několika společně strávených dnech jej Anne pozve do Anglie na prázdniny, kde žije se svou matkou a sestrou Muriel, kterou by chtěla dát s Claudem dohromady. Během prázdnin se mladá trojice velmi sblíží, a Claude s Muriel se do sebe hluboce zamilují. Před uzavřením sňatku se milenci dohodnou na jednoletém „zkouškovém“ období svého vztahu.
