‘Otis fue una bofetada de la naturaleza’, investigador de la UNAM

Ignacio Arturo Quintanar, investigador del Instituto de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y cambio climático de la UNAM, habló de los huracanes como Otis que serán cada vez más frecuentes a causa del cambio climático.

El investigador detalló que lo que vimos en Guerrero se debió, principalmente, a las temperaturas superficiales del océano, que están por más o menos 2 o 3° por arriba de lo normal, “o sea en esta época del año es normal que los océanos hayan capturado bastante de la energía solar durante el año, pero básicamente es una situación anómala”.

Ignacio Arturo Quintanar detalló que estos fenómenos meteorológicos han existido siempre a lo largo de la historia de la Tierra, incluso Acapulco ha sido azotado con fuerza por estos fenómenos; “lo que sí es cierto, es que la frecuencia de estos eventos no ha cambiado en mucho tiempo, pero la intensidad se ha amplificado”.

En cuanto a Otis, detalló que no se sabe a ciencia cierta el porqué de su intensificación, pero reconoció que hay 3 cuestiones que se involucran:

“La temperatura tan alta la superficie del océano del mar, el contenido de calor en toda la columna de agua y además si nos fijamos en las imágenes de satélite que el huracán permaneció por mucho tiempo rotando, absorbiendo la energía, entonces, este eso también dio pauta para que se intensifica tan rápido y es algo que no tuvieron en cuenta los modelos”.
