Las artesanías de lapidaria y cantera dan identidad al Edomex

La lapidaria y cantera forman parte de las 13 ramas artesanales que se elaboran en la entidad mexiquense, resultado de la historia y cultura heredada por nuestros antepasados, dejando para la posteridad técnicas que se materializan en ingeniosas piezas utilitarias, de ornato y arquitectónicas.

Actualmente, el IIFAEM cuenta con 2 mil 483 personas registradas en el padrón estatal de artesanos que se dedican a esta actividad; 592 de ellas son mujeres y mil 891, hombres.

Los municipios donde se encuentran los principales talleres son Acambay, Aculco, Chimalhuacán, Nezahualcóyotl, Otumba, San Martín de las Pirámides, Teotihuacán y Toluca.

Las artesanas y los artesanos que procesan la lapidaria dan vida a piedras preciosas y semipreciosas como obsidiana, ágata, ópalo, amatista, venturina, malaquita, jade y ónix, empuñando para ello martillos, cortafríos y cinceles, entre otras herramientas.

El resultado de su labor se expresa en collares, anillos, máscaras teotihuacanas, copas, morteros, fruteros, pisapapeles, piezas para masajes y abrecartas.

Mientras que el arte de la cantera consiste en dar forma a los bloques a través de la técnica de labrado y cincelado, creando increíbles relieves a la piedra. Destacan piezas como fuentes, pilas para agua, cruces, esculturas y pilares.

Con la piedra volcánica aún se conservan utensilios de cocina prehispánica como el molcajete y el metate, que son utilizados por las cocineras tradicionales para la molienda de sus especias y darle una buena sazón a la gastronomía.
