Ione Skye, 54, revealed in her new memoir, “Say Everything,” that she had sex with her “Say Anything” co-star John Cusack years after the 1989 teen rom-com.
“I had to get it out of my system,” she wrote in the book.
Skye confirmed that her hookup with Cusack, 58, happened after her 1999 divorce from her first husband, Adam Horowitz.
Cusack read a draft of Skye’s memoir, she said, and he texted her, “You made the experience sound so meh! It wasn’t ‘meh’ for me.”
“I was like, ‘I’m telling a story, and it was more about how all of our chemistry was in our working together and stimulating each other’s minds, not sleeping together!’” Skye told People.
“I felt a little bad, but, oh well,” she added.
In her book, Skye said that she and Cusack had crushes on each other while filming “Say Anything,” but they never physically acted on their feelings on the movie’s set.
Directed by Cameron Crowe, “Say Anything” follows the romance between two high school students, one the class valedictorian (Skye), after their graduation. The cast also includes John Mahoney, Lili Taylor, Jeremy Piven, Pamela Adlon and Jason Gould.
Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler famously holds a boombox over his head outside Diane Court’s (Skye) house to win her back.
In 2020, Cusack was asked if he minds still being asked about the boombox scene.
“Yeah, but they come up about other things too,” Cusack said on “Today.”
“And then, I figure, you know, that’s kind of a champagne problem, right? I think if that’s as tough as it’s going to get for me, I’m a pretty lucky guy.”
Skye tied the knot with her first husband in 1992 but they split less than a decade later.
She said in her book that during her marriage to Horowitz, she discovered her bisexuality and had multiple affairs including with model Jenny Shimizu.
Skye told Horowitz that he’d be mentioned in her memoir. “He’s private, but also such a big part of my story so he couldn’t not be in it,” she said.
The “Wayne’s World” star went on to have a brief relationship with furniture designer David Netto, with whom she welcomed daughter Kate in 2001.
Since 2008, Skye has been married to Australian musician Ben Lee. Their daughter Goldie was born in 2009.
“My husband, yeah, he knew everything,” said Skye. “I mean, he’s kind of amazing. I don’t think anything ruffled his feathers except that I spent so much time ruminating on a lot of the early chapters, and then by the time I got to the end and his chapters, I was sort of rushing through it. And he was like, wait a minute, wait a minute. I’ve been by your side this whole time and you can’t rush through my part!”
Skye wrote in her memoir that she also had a crush on River Phoenix, whom she starred with in 1988’s “A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon.”
“River ended up being a brother to me, but I remember at the time thinking, ‘Oh I’m in love with him!’ I couldn’t wait to do my kissing scene with him. He was just delicious,” she said.
